Regal Crest Homes wins 2022 CRESNET President’s Award
This year, Regal Crest Homes received the President’s Award in the Cross Border Builder Challenge sponsored by the Canadian Residential Energy Services Network. The award recognizes builders who are pioneering the path to high-energy performance homes.
Regal Crest was recognized for its commitment to the Savings by Design program from Enbridge Gas which, through building science and energy modelling, helps builders design and construct energy-saving homes that offer maximum comfort with minimal environmental impact.
Drawing on this expertise, Regal Crest created a customized building solution at Anchor Woods, its community in Holland Landing, that surpassed municipal requirements for energy efficiency and value. According to Regal Crest contract and costing manager Mike Rubino, over 100 homes in that community average a HERS score — a measure from the international Home Energy Rating Systems — of 42.
For context, a home built to code would receive a HERS score of 100 and a net-zero energy home a zero. Every 1-point reduction corresponds to a 1% reduction in energy consumption against a HERS Reference Home (i.e. one built to code).
“Anchor Woods put us on the map,” said Regal Crest contract and costing manager Mike Rubino. “Although this project was built to Energy Star to comply with a municipal subdivision agreement, it gave us a platform to go beyond the confines of the program — with the same savings, energy efficiency and value — and create customized building solutions instead of following a label.”
Currently, all current Regal Crest’s new homes boast an impressive HERS score of 46. Rubino said Regal Crest is well positioned to meet the federal government’s commitment to developing a Net Zero greenhouse emissions model Building Code for provinces by 2024.
“We don’t have a problem meeting this goal, as long as we can have a say in how it’s done,” Rubino said. “This will help us achieve what the municipality wants, at a lower cost.”
