After a long and arduous fight, David Dunlap Observatory in Richmond Hill was declared a national historic site on July 31st, 2019 by Environment Minister Catherine McKenna. This landmark is a wonderful contribution to science as stargazing is a big part of ongoing scientific studies. The Observatory is now considered as 1 of 8 historical sites in Canada.

In a recent Toronto Star article, Mayor Dave Barrow of Richmond Hill said, “We are thrilled that the Richmond Hill David Dunlap Observatory was recognized with historical designation.” The stargazing community, comprised of Richmond Hill residents, city staff and council members, has been fighting to preserve David Dunlap Observatory for 10 years.
